Traditionally, CAD software has been a desktop application, but since the introduction of mobile and web applications, which have many benefits over desktop software, the industry has witnessed a significant shift towards the use of mobile and web applications.

In the traditional approach, CAD application use cases and scenarios were established to meet the requirements of the designed and manufactured product. With the introduction of mobile and web applications, more flexible CAD use cases were considered to meet the users’ needs. Mobile CAD is one of the most common use cases of mobile and web applications in which mobile and web users can draw, edit, manipulate and share designs on-the-go. Mobile and web users, who are familiar with traditional desktop CAD software, can also start using mobile CAD without any learning curve.

The research that was conducted in this paper provides a guideline on the migration of traditional desktop CAD software to mobile and web applications. It also analyses the productivity gains that can be achieved if a mobile and web application is migrated from mobile to web.

To migrate CAD use cases and scenarios from mobile to web, a mobile application is developed using HTML, JavaScript, Jquery, GWT and Java, while the web application is developed using ASP.NET and C#.

Due to security and privacy issues, the mobile application should be as flexible as possible. It was found that almost every use case can be migrated to mobile. This is because most mobile devices offer good computational and graphical capabilities. The exception to this rule is a Windows RT tablet, which is not suitable for mobile CAD applications because of its limited computing power and display resolution. The research involved migration of the most commonly used and often used use cases from mobile to web.

A table of potential use cases for mobile and web CAD applications was first determined based on the business requirements of the user.

The main objective of the research was to determine the productivity gains of mobile and web CAD software as compared to traditional desktop software.

The scenario outlines the following issues:

Portability — the ability of the CAD software to work across different platforms.

Mobile — the ability of the CAD software to be used on mobile devices.

Productivity — the gain in productivity as compared to traditional desktop CAD software.

Web — the ability of the CAD software to work on the web as a web app.
